October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On this occasion, we remind you that although breast cancer is a serious disease, it can be effectively treated – early detection of any changes is crucial. In 2010, 15,800 cases of breast cancer were recorded in our country. Just three years later, there were over 17,000 cases. Currently, nearly 19,000 new cases are reported annually, and about 6,000 women die from breast cancer.
The statistics are not favorable, mainly because many breast cancer cases are detected at an advanced stage when effective therapy is difficult. However, during the October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is worth reminding once again that this disease is fully curable – the key is early diagnosis. In such cases, therapy may be limited to removing the lesion, performing necessary tests, and ongoing medical supervision.

Breast ultrasound – an important examination in breast cancer prevention

A very important examination in breast cancer prevention is ultrasound. Every woman over 30 years old should undergo it at least once every 12 months (women in risk groups, e.g., with a family history of cancer – twice a year). It is a safe, completely painless, and non-invasive examination. It allows detection of changes as small as about 2-3 mm in diameter and preliminarily distinguishes tumors from cysts or fibroadenomas.
Of course, you should also undergo breast ultrasound whenever you notice symptoms such as:

• breast pain and tenderness,
• palpable lumps and nodules,
• changes in breast shape,
• sudden breast asymmetry,
• discharge from the nipple.

At the Wilmed clinic in Warsaw, breast ultrasounds are performed by doctors specializing in the diagnosis and treatment – including surgical treatment – of breast cancer. This way, after completing the examinations (ultrasound and mammography), patients receive a diagnosis and, if necessary, can immediately undergo further diagnostics. Our specialists perform (core needle or mammotome biopsies, which provide samples for histopathological examination to assess the type of lesion). Based on the histopathological results, a Wilmed Clinic doctor can recommend or initiate appropriate treatment.
