Palatine Tonsil Removal Surgery

Removal of enlarged palatine tonsils – a permanent solution to chronic throat problems.

Why is it worth having tonsil removal surgery in adulthood?

Chronic tonsillitis, recurrent angina, unpleasant mouth odor, or a constant feeling of throat discomfort significantly reduce quality of life.

Tonsil removal surgery, also known as tonsillectomy, is an effective way to permanently eliminate the source of infection and regain daily comfort.

Indications for Palatine Tonsil Removal Surgery

Removal of the tonsils does not weaken the immune system but can actually reduce the frequency of many diseases.

Tonsil removal surgery is recommended for individuals who suffer from:

  • chronic tonsillitis with recurrent angina (several times a year, over several consecutive years)
  • recurrent peritonsillar abscesses
  • focal diseases
  • persistent unpleasant mouth odor caused by abundant formation of tonsil plugs
  • obstructive sleep apnea and snoring
  • swallowing difficulties
  • speech problems
  • or suspicion of a tumor

Benefits of undergoing palatine tonsil removal surgery

Tonsillectomy is an effective and lasting solution for individuals struggling with recurrent infections, sore throat, and chronic discomfort.

Removal of pathologically altered tonsils eliminates the source of the problem, allowing you to regain health, energy, and full comfort in daily functioning.

1
End of recurring tonsillitis

Tonsil removal eliminates chronic inflammatory foci, significantly reducing the number of throat infections and the need for antibiotic use.

2
Improvement in sleep quality

Enlarged or altered tonsils often obstruct breathing at night. After the procedure, sleep becomes deeper and more restorative, and snoring may be reduced.

3
Better breathing and swallowing

The procedure restores throat patency, facilitating breathing, speaking, and eating without a feeling of obstruction or pain.

4
Elimination of unpleasant mouth odor

Chronically altered tonsils are often a source of bacteria causing bad breath. Their removal improves breath freshness.

5
Increased body immunity

The absence of a constant inflammatory focus allows the body to cope more effectively with other infections.

6
Avoidance of serious health consequences of tonsil hypertrophy

Such as hearing loss, glomerulonephritis, or myocarditis

What are palatine tonsils?

Palatine tonsils are elliptical clusters of lymphatic tissue located on both sides of the throat, approximately 2 cm long and 1 cm wide. They are part of the immune system. Their role is to produce antigens, substances used to generate immune antibodies. They serve as the first barrier protecting our respiratory system from pathogens. Due to their location, their function is to prevent the spread of germs and the development of disease.

Enlargement of the palatine tonsils is not a disease, but rather a manifestation of the human immune system’s activity, signaling readiness to fight infection. After overcoming the illness, they return to their normal size.

As a result of, among other things, chronic infections of the throat, nose, and sinuses, as well as hormonal disorders, chronic tonsil hypertrophy may occur, leading to:

  • breathing disorders due to impaired patency of the nose, paranasal sinuses, and Eustachian tubes, resulting in habitual mouth breathing
  • recurrent middle ear infections
  • hearing loss
  • nasal speech with altered voice tone
  • sleep apnea and resulting hypoxia
  • snoring
  • frequent lower and upper respiratory tract infections
  • allergies and chronic rhinitis.

Enlarged or chronically altered tonsils can hinder breathing, swallowing, and proper sleep. Their removal helps restore throat patency, improve sleep quality, and reduce snoring.

What does the tonsil removal procedure involve?

The removal of the palatine tonsils (Tonsillectomy) provides a permanent solution to chronic tonsillitis causing pathological enlargement of the tonsils when conservative methods are ineffective.

Tonsillectomy is performed on adult patients, while children and adolescents undergo tonsillotomy, which involves trimming the tonsils by removing 30-60% of their mass.

The tonsil removal surgery is performed through the oral cavity. No incisions are made on the facial or neck skin. The procedure involves separating the palatine tonsils from the surrounding tissues and then removing them along with their surrounding capsules. Bleeding is controlled using electrocoagulation, pressure, or ligation of blood vessels. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.

FAQ

Preparation for the procedure
Preparation for the surgical procedure includes performing peripheral blood tests, urine tests, ECG, and other examinations recommended by the physician qualifying the patient for surgery and anesthesia. Additionally, the following guidelines are important: the patient must fast before the procedure, all jewelry must be removed prior to surgery, and any previously taken medications should be discussed with the doctor and nursing instructions regarding their discontinuation or alternative administration must be followed.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so it is painless. After the surgery, a sore throat may occur, which gradually subsides and is managed with pain relief medication.
What does the recovery process look like?
The healing period lasts about 10–14 days. During this time, rest is recommended, along with a liquid or semi-liquid diet and avoiding physical exertion.
Is the procedure safe?
Tonsillectomy is a routine and safe procedure, performed for years in otolaryngology, adhering to appropriate standards of qualification and postoperative care.
Contraindications for the procedure
It is not always possible to perform tonsil removal surgery. Contraindications include, among others: velopharyngeal insufficiency, circulatory and respiratory failure, cleft palate, short palate, acute respiratory tract inflammation, bifid tongue, certain blood diseases (e.g., bleeding disorders, leukemia), active tuberculosis, chronic atrophic pharyngitis.
Possible complications after the procedure
After the removal of the palatine tonsils, the following consequences or complications may occur: Common but harmless, such as uvula swelling, sore throat, ear pain, throat bleeding up to 7 days after the procedure, neck swelling, voice changes, enlargement and pain of the neck lymph nodes in the first days after the procedure, dryness in the throat, burning sensation, more frequent hoarseness, and rarely occurring, much more serious: severe bleeding requiring suturing of the tonsillar niches, patient sedation, and packing of the lower throat, abscess within the throat.
Zalecenia pooperacyjne
Pain symptoms after surgery may persist for several weeks, therefore it is recommended to take painkillers prescribed by the doctor. After the surgery, a semi-liquid diet should be followed for several days; hot, acidic, and spicy foods must be avoided. Cool yogurts or ice cream will be good allies in combating pain and swallowing difficulties occurring after the procedure. Physical exertion, lifting, and overloading the body should be avoided for about 2 - 4 weeks. Exposure to strong sunlight and heat should also be avoided. These recommendations must be strictly followed because the risk of bleeding after this procedure exists for up to 14 days post-operation.
Does immunity decrease after tonsil removal?
No. In adults, chronically diseased tonsils no longer perform their protective function, and their removal often improves the overall immunity of the body.
