Breast reduction – mammoplasty

A procedure that provides great relief, improving quality of life and body proportions

Breast Reduction Surgery

Why might a woman have overly large breasts?

There are many reasons why a woman may have large breasts, but one of the main factors is genetics. Breast size can therefore be a result of inheritance. Additionally, hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can also affect breast size.

What problems can large breasts cause?

Unfortunately, large breasts can cause various problems. Performing simple activities such as running or lifting objects can often be very difficult. The strain caused by the weight of large breasts leads to back and neck pain as well as numerous tensions in the shoulders. Finding a properly fitting bra can also be very challenging.

For women with excessively large breasts, there is the option of breast reduction surgery,
which not only improves body proportions but also provides great relief and significantly enhances quality of life.

Mammoplasty procedure – when to perform it?

What does the procedure involve?

The mammoplasty procedure, or breast reduction, involves surgically reducing the volume of the breasts while simultaneously changing their shape, lifting the breasts, and repositioning the nipple-areola complex.

When is the procedure performed?

Breast reduction is performed for both health and aesthetic reasons.

Large, disproportionate breasts often cause discomfort for the patient, hinder daily activities, and also lead to posture defects. In women suffering from gigantomastia, one breast can weigh even 2.5 to 3 kg, while a normally sized breast weighs about 0.5 kg. The skin and chest muscles cannot support such weight, resulting in significant strain on the spine.

FAQ

What is the recovery like after breast reduction surgery?
After the surgery, the patient stays in the hospital for 1 day. During this time, pain medications are administered. Immediately after the surgery, a special bra is applied to properly support and shape the final appearance of the breasts. The bra should then be worn by the patient around the clock for one month. Swelling persists for about 2 weeks after the surgery. Stitches are removed approximately 7-14 days after the procedure. Sensation in the nipple area may be reduced or absent in the case of an inverted “T” incision. Physical activity is contraindicated during recovery. Normal activities can be resumed after one month. If any pain occurs, the patient should report it to their doctor. The breast reduction effect is long-lasting and visible immediately after the procedure. After the swelling subsides, the breast will take its final shape and size after about 6 months.
What are the contraindications for breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction is not performed on pregnant or breastfeeding women. Contraindications also include cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, and blood clotting disorders.
How to prepare for the procedure?
A consultation with a plastic surgeon is essential before the plastic surgery. During the meeting, the doctor discusses the course of the procedure, the possible results, and potential postoperative complications with the patient. It is very important to inform the doctor about all medications taken, both prescription and over-the-counter, including any drugs used. On the day of the surgery, after admission to the clinic, the plastic surgeon conducts a conversation with the patient and ultimately decides whether to perform the procedure. On the day of the surgery, eating or drinking is not allowed for six hours before the operation. Patients who smoke should quit nicotine six weeks before the surgery, as it reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood and can significantly increase the risk of postoperative complications.
Do scars remain after breast reduction?
Yes, however, they are planned in such a way as to be as inconspicuous as possible. Over time, they fade and become barely noticeable. Using the recommended products and proper care significantly improves their appearance.
Does breast reduction improve symmetry?
Yes. The procedure allows for equalizing the size and shape of the breasts, resulting in a harmonious, natural effect.
Is the procedure safe?
Breast reduction is one of the most commonly performed procedures in plastic surgery. With proper qualification and an experienced team, it is a safe and predictable procedure.
Is the result of the surgery permanent?
Yes. The removed tissue does not regrow. However, fluctuations in body weight, pregnancy, or hormonal changes may affect the appearance of the breasts in the future.
