Surgical treatment of perianal thrombosis
Perianal thrombosis is a thrombotic inflammation of the perianal vascular plexuses.
In advanced hemorrhoidal disease, the vascular plexuses, arteriovenous, are significantly enlarged, displaced outside the anal canal (so-called bleeding hemorrhoids) and irreducible. Blood flow in such vessels becomes impaired – venous blood cannot freely drain from the anal area. Complete blood stasis in compressed venous vessels promotes the formation of clots within their lumen. Such a clot completely blocks blood flow, which manifests as acute pain and leads to the development of thrombosis.
A characteristic bluish lump forms at the anal margin, painful even to gentle touch. This is the marginal thrombus, an exceptionally troublesome condition for the patient known by many names: thrombosis of the perianal venous plexus, perianal thrombosis, thrombosed external hemorrhoids, or perianal hematoma.
Symptoms and complaints associated with the development of perianal thrombosis
The main causes of perianal thrombosis include, among others: a sedentary lifestyle, constipation, strenuous bowel movements, pregnancy, and childbirth, which can lead to hemorrhoidal disease. The direct cause of anal thrombosis is untreated or improperly treated hemorrhoidal disease.
The main symptoms and complaints accompanying and potentially indicating the development of perianal thrombosis are:
- sharp anal pain with sudden onset
- a strongly painful palpable lump in the anus
- itching and burning
- bright red bleeding from the anus
