Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (mammotomic)

Modern method of diagnosis and non-surgical removal of breast tumors

Mammotomic biopsy

According to statistics, about 80% of changes detected in the breasts are benign, however, every change should undergo detailed diagnostics and biopsy – an examination that allows for determining the nature of the tumor.

Mammotomic biopsy, that is vacuum-assisted core needle biopsy, is a procedure that provides a definitive diagnosis based on histopathological analysis, while leaving only a small mark on the patient’s skin. This method combines the effectiveness of surgical biopsy with the low invasiveness of core needle biopsy.

This method also enables non-surgical removal of breast lesions up to 2 cm in diameter.

Which breast changes should be examined and consulted with a doctor?

Annually, nearly 13,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in Poland. Statistically, in our country, it is the most common cause of death among women under 65 years of age. Still, half of the diagnosed cases prove fatal due to late detection of changes. We remind that regular mammography and ultrasound examinations are fundamental in breast disease prevention. These methods allow for early detection of even non-palpable breast tumors.

Detecting changes at an early stage through mammographic screening contributes to a reduction in mortality by up to one-third. For patients over 50 years old, breast examinations reduce mortality by as much as 35%. According to statistics, about 80% of changes detected in the breasts are benign, however, every change should undergo detailed diagnostics and biopsy – an examination that allows for determining the nature of the tumor.

Advantages of Mammotomic Biopsy

  • Effectiveness of surgical biopsy
A single puncture allows for the collection of a sufficient amount of tissue for examination. It avoids the need for surgical removal of tumor tissue for histopathological examination.
  • Possibility of complete tumor removal without surgery
This method allows for the removal of breast lesions up to 2 cm in diameter.
  • The procedure duration is very short compared to surgical intervention
The procedure lasts about 20 minutes. After the procedure, the patient can immediately return to normal life without the need for hospitalization.
  • No scar from surgical incision
Thanks to this method, only a needle puncture mark remains instead of a surgical incision scar that forms after surgery.

FAQ

What does the mammotome biopsy procedure look like?
The mammotome biopsy system consists of a device generating vacuum and a 3mm needle containing a rotary mechanism, allowing a single puncture to collect a sufficient amount of tissue for examination or to remove the entire lesion. Everything is performed under ultrasound guidance. The breast lesion is located using an ultrasound probe, and then the device either collects the lesion for examination or completely removes it. The entire process can be observed on the monitor screen. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. After the procedure, the patient can immediately return to normal life without the need for hospitalization. The collected samples are sent for histopathological examination. If the result is negative, the lesion is benign and there is no cause for concern!
What are the disadvantages of other types of biopsies?
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy involves multiple punctures of the lesion with a thin needle to obtain cells for cytological examination. This method is quick, easily accessible, and minimally invasive. Unfortunately, it does not always provide an adequate amount of material to characterize the visible lesion. Core needle biopsy is more invasive, as it involves excising a tissue fragment from the tumor using a special needle, which is then sent for histopathological examination. Despite obtaining a larger amount of material than the fine-needle method, it often requires multiple punctures. Surgical biopsy is a procedure that, although providing full diagnostic accuracy, is invasive and may lead to breast deformation, visible scarring, and requires hospitalization.
