A videodermatoscope is a precise device that enables comprehensive examination of the skin surface and computer analysis and digital documentation of skin lesions. By using an epiluminescence microscope and specialized software, it is possible to effectively monitor skin lesions over time, with particular attention to atypical lesions. The specialist can compare the examined skin lesions with archival photos preserved in the patient’s medical records.
The videodermatoscope allows early detection of melanoma and precancerous lesions. Diagnosing skin lesions in their initial development phase and monitoring changes in color, size, and structure is the most effective method to eliminate the risk of malignant transformation.
Which Lesions Are Examined Using Videodermoscopy?
Only 30-40% of melanoma cases develop from pre-existing pigmented moles. Preventive care for skin lesions should address both existing and newly formed lesions. If a change in size or color is observed in existing moles or a new lesion appears on the skin, a specialist should be consulted for a videodermatoscopic skin examination.
Atypical pigmented lesions most commonly appear:
- on the back, chest, calves, head, and neck
- but can also appear anywhere on the skin

Methods of Treating Lesions at Risk of Malignant Transformation
If there is suspicion regarding the nature of a mole, the safest treatment method is surgical removal and histopathological examination to verify whether the excised mole contained cancer cells. Preventive removal of moles carries no risk of malignant transformation.
The surgical procedure to remove a mole is painless, performed under local anesthesia, and involves excising the lesion along with a fragment of healthy skin using a scalpel. Sutures are then applied and removed after 7–14 days. The experience of surgeons in aesthetic surgery contributes to the use of appropriate skin suturing techniques after lesion removal, resulting in minimally visible scars.
