What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a group of symptoms caused by compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, also known as median nerve compression neuropathy.

The carpal tunnel is surrounded from below and on the sides by the carpal bones, and from above by the transverse carpal ligament. Inside the tunnel run the median nerve and the tendons of the finger flexor muscles, which enable proper hand function. If, due to inflammatory changes, the tunnel becomes too narrow, it causes pressure on the nerve fibers and degenerative changes.

What are the symptoms?

Typical symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • wrist pain, accompanied by pain in the hand and fingers,
  • neurological disturbances, such as: sensory problems, tingling in the wrist, sensations of pricking and numbness in the area of the first three fingers,
  • muscle weakness,
  • atrophy of the thenar muscles (problems arise with clenching the fist, gripping the hand, opening jars, holding objects, and performing precise finger movements),
  • skin discoloration,
  • disrupted sweating in the hand and fingers,
  • brittle and fragile nails.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome depend on the stage of the disease:
  • in the first phase of the condition, pain and numbness in the fingers are felt, especially at night; pain may radiate to the forearm and shoulder,
  • in the second phase, pain also occurs during the day, especially during activities requiring effort; this is accompanied by a significant decline in dexterity, mainly in tasks requiring precision,
  • in the third phase, all the above symptoms occur more frequently and with greater intensity, and muscle atrophy may also appear.
