Apheresis – a modern method of blood purification

Effective support for many diseases – for health, comfort, and a better quality of life.

What is therapeutic apheresis?

Apheresis is a modern, scientifically validated method of selective blood purification that allows the removal of harmful substances, such as:

  • autoantibodies,
  • proinflammatory cytokines,
  • lipoproteins (including LDL and lipoprotein(a)),
  • toxins and heavy metals.

This makes the procedure holistic, as it simultaneously influences multiple disease mechanisms.

Apheresis has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, improves physical and mental performance, cleanses the body of heavy metals, harmful substances, and drug residues, enhances the effectiveness of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, and supports longevity.

Which methods are used in apheresis?

At Szpital Wilmed, apheresis is performed according to clinical indication using two main methods:

Double Filtration Plasmapheresis (DFPP)

  • This is a selective blood purification method that removes pathogenic substances such as autoantibodies, proinflammatory cytokines, lipoproteins, and toxins.
  • The procedure is performed in a closed circuit – red blood cells and other necessary components are immediately returned to the body, while the purified plasma is returned to the patient’s bloodstream.
  • DFPP allows simultaneous treatment of multiple diseases as various harmful molecules can be removed in a single procedure.
  • The treatment is safe and precise and is performed using sterile single-use filters with precisely calibrated pore sizes.

Hemoperfusion

  • Used in severe inflammatory conditions, sepsis, poisoning, kidney or liver failure, as well as in acute metabolic diseases.
  • During hemoperfusion, the entire blood passes through a special adsorption cartridge that removes toxins, inflammatory mediators, excess medications, bilirubin, β2-microglobulins, parathyroid hormone, and other harmful substances.
  • This method enables rapid and effective blood purification from toxins with minimal patient burden.

Both methods are safe, effective, and comply with international guidelines in the United States (ASFA Guidelines), Germany (Standard Therapeutic Apheresis DGfN), Japan (Japanese Society for Apheresis Guidelines), and other countries. This confirms their established clinical value and international recognition. The choice of the specific method depends on the patient’s health condition and therapeutic goal.

Course of therapeutic apheresis

DFPP – Double Filtration Plasmapheresis

  1. Installation of a sterile filter set.
  2. Administration of an anticoagulant (e.g., heparin).
  3. Blood withdrawal – the first filter separates red blood cells, which are immediately returned to the patient.
  4. The plasma flows into the second filter, where autoantibodies, cytokines, lipoproteins, toxins, and heavy metals are removed.
  5. The purified plasma is returned to the body; the concentrated pathogenic plasma can be used for diagnostic tests.

Hemoperfusion

  • All blood passes through an adsorption cartridge that removes toxins, cytokines, bilirubin, excess medications, β2-microglobulins, and other harmful substances.
  • Used in severe inflammatory conditions, sepsis, poisoning, and acute diseases of the kidneys, liver, and lungs.

Apheresis treatments last 2–3 hours and are painless. In most cases, puncture is performed via the veins of the forearm, similar to a standard infusion.

After the procedure, the patient may receive an individual intravenous vitamin therapy to support regeneration and vitality.

FAQ

Is apheresis treatment painful?
No. The procedure is painless and well tolerated by patients. It is performed via a venous cannula, similar to a standard blood draw or infusion.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure usually lasts 2 to 3 hours, depending on the method used and the medical indications.
How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments is determined individually by the doctor and depends on the type of disease, its progression, and the body's response to the therapy.
When are the first therapy effects visible?
In some patients, an improvement in well-being or relief of symptoms occurs after the first treatment, but in many cases, several sessions yield the best results.
Is apheresis safe?
Yes. The procedure is performed with modern equipment and sterile single-use filter sets, and the entire process is conducted under the supervision of qualified medical personnel.
Can one return to normal activities after apheresis?
In most cases, the patient can return to their daily activities on the same day. However, it is recommended to avoid intense physical exertion for a few hours after the procedure.
Can apheresis support the treatment of several diseases simultaneously?
Yes. An advantage of this therapy is its multifunctional effect – the removal of various disease-promoting factors can simultaneously influence multiple disease mechanisms.
Can apheresis be combined with other therapies?
Apheresis often serves as a complement to standard pharmacological treatment or other specialized therapies, supports the body's regeneration, and reduces inflammatory processes.
