Aesthetic removal of skin lesions

Moles, birthmarks, warts, papillomas – many people of all ages struggle with various types of skin lesions. In most cases, they are only an aesthetic issue, although sometimes they need to be monitored and checked for malignant transformation.

Skin lesions such as moles, birthmarks, warts, or fibromas are most often the result of pigmentary skin disorders and sometimes viral infections. They are usually purely cosmetic defects, although if located in sensitive areas of the body, they may be irritated by clothing or footwear.

Methods of removing birthmarks

Depending on the type of lesion, the doctor proposes an appropriate removal method to the patient.

Generally, skin lesions are removed using the following methods:

• Non-cancerous lesions are removed by electrocoagulation under local anesthesia. During the procedure, the dermis is not damaged, and the method does not require suturing; usually, no scar remains after removal, achieving a very good aesthetic effect. After the procedure, a scab forms at the removal site, healing over 7 to 10 days. Histopathological examination of the removed lesion is possible with this method.
• Epidermoid cysts and lipomas are removed surgically with histopathological examination performed.
• In cases of suspected lesion nature, malignant or suspicious for cancer, the safest treatment method is surgical removal with histopathological examination to verify that the excised lesion did not contain cancer cells.

NOTE!

Prophylactic removal of birthmarks carries no risk of malignant transformation.

What does the procedure involve?

Surgical removal of a birthmark, epidermoid cyst, or lipoma is painless, performed under local anesthesia, and involves excision of the lesion along with a margin of healthy skin using a scalpel. Sutures are then applied and removed after 7–14 days. The experience of surgeons in aesthetic surgery contributes to the use of appropriate skin suturing techniques after lesion removal, resulting in minimally visible scars.

Types of skin lesions

There are various types of skin lesions. Generally, we divide them into:

• non-neoplastic and benign tumors
• precancerous lesions
• malignant tumors

Non-neoplastic and benign tumors include, among others:

• epithelial lesions such as warts, seborrheic keratoses, keratoacanthomas, epidermoid cysts
• mesenchymal lesions such as fibromas, lipomas, xanthomas, smooth muscle tumors, glomus tumors, hemangiomas, granulomas

Precancerous lesions include, among others:

• senile keratosis, cutaneous horn, pigmented parchment skin
• dermatoses, long-lasting ulcers, scars

Malignant tumors include, among others:

• squamous cell carcinoma and glandular carcinoma
• recurrent fibrous nodular tumor and angiosarcoma
• melanoma
