Vertebroplasty - safe treatment of vertebral fractures.
What is vertebroplasty?
Vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and stentoplasty are among the latest methods for treating spinal disorders such as:
- osteoporotic compression fractures of vertebral bodies,
- hemangiomas,
- cancer metastases.
These are minimally invasive procedures that help reduce or eliminate back pain by providing mechanical support inside the vertebra and preventing further progression of spinal deformity. Unlike traditional spinal surgery methods, patients undergoing vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, or stentoplasty can get up just a few hours after the procedure and return to daily activities pain-free.
Vertebroplasty involves filling the interior of the fractured vertebral body with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), known as „bone cement,” or in some cases, another remodeling material.
Kyphoplasty differs from vertebroplasty in that before filling with cement, the vertebra is realigned—restoring vertebral body height by inflating balloons inside the vertebra.
Stentoplasty differs from kyphoplasty in that an implant (stent, e.g., VBS, SpineJack, or others) is placed inside the vertebra simultaneously with realignment, stabilizing the vertebra from within. Only after implant placement is the vertebral body filled with „bone cement.”
These minimally invasive procedures can restore spinal function and regain movement comfort.

Indications for vertebroplasty
These procedures are dedicated to patients with the following spinal conditions:
- compression fractures or risk of spinal fractures caused by bone weakening due to osteoporosis
- hemangiomas, i.e., vascular tumors of the vertebral bodies, causing increasing pain symptoms
- cancer metastases from other organs to the spine. In such cases, before filling the vertebra with „cement,” radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the metastatic lesion is often recommended (RF – RadioFrequency – high-frequency electrosurgery – radio waves).

Minimally Invasive
Because vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive and relatively effective procedure, it often provides rapid relief from pain symptoms. Bone cement stabilizes the fractured vertebra, significantly reducing the duration of wearing an orthopedic brace. In cases of suspected pathological fracture due to cancer, it is possible to obtain a biopsy sample for histopathological examination.
Short Recovery
Shortly after the procedure, the patient can return home and perform daily activities. It is recommended to avoid lifting heavy objects for 6 weeks after surgery to allow full healing of the fracture.
Small Postoperative Scar
The postoperative scar is significantly smaller – about 2-3 mm, with no damage to the paraspinal muscles. Due to the minimal size of the surgical field, the risk of infection at the surgical wound site is also low, and pain around the scar is practically absent.
