Removal of breast tumors

Early detection of suspicious pathological changes is very important for the success of breast cancer treatment.

Breast Tumors

Annually, nearly 13,000 women in Poland are diagnosed with breast cancer. Statistically, in our country, it is the most common cause of death among women under 65 years of age. Still, as many as half of diagnosed cases prove fatal due to too late detection of changes.

The basis for preventing breast diseases is regular self-examination and regular mammography and ultrasound examinations. These methods allow early detection of even non-palpable breast and nipple tumors.

Detecting changes at an early stage through mammographic screening contributes to a reduction in mortality by as much as one-third. For patients over 50 years old, breast examinations reduce mortality by up to 35%. According to statistics, about 80% of changes detected in breasts are benign, but every change should undergo detailed diagnostics to determine the nature of the tumor.

It is worth remembering that most breast lumps result from natural hormonal processes occurring at various stages of a woman’s life, e.g., during breastfeeding or menopause. However, every such change should be consulted with a doctor.

Types of breast diseases

Breast diseases mainly occur in the form of:

1

Inflammatory changes usually related to insufficient emptying of milk glands during breastfeeding or the formation of abscesses.

2

Nodular breast changes such as fibroadenomas, cysts, or intraductal papillomas.

3

Breast cancer (commonly: breast carcinoma) – one of the most common and dangerous malignant tumors

Removal of breast tumors

Depending on the type and size of the pathological lesion, various methods of breast tumor removal are used.

1

Mammotomic biopsy – a non-surgical method enabling the removal of breast lesions not exceeding 2 cm in diameter.

2

Surgical removal of nodules – this method removes lesions larger than 2 cm in diameter that cannot be removed non-surgically using mammotomic biopsy.

3

Breast cancer surgeries – depending on the type of cancer: mastectomy – complete removal of the breast or breast-conserving surgery – excision of the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue.

Benefits of breast tumor removal

  • The possibility of complete tumor removal without surgery
This method allows the removal of breast lesions up to 2 cm in diameter using a single puncture with a special needle. Thanks to this method, only a needle puncture mark remains instead of a surgical scar that forms after an operation.
  • Avoidance of breast deformity
By removing benign lesions, we prevent breast deformity caused by rapidly growing tumors and the development of asymmetry.
  • Avoidance of pain symptoms
By removing benign lesions, we prevent the occurrence of breast pain associated with a growing tumor.
  • Prevention of tumor malignancy
By removing benign breast lesions, we can prevent the possibility of the tumor transforming into a malignant cancer.
  • Chance for cure
Diagnosing and removing breast cancer at an early stage allows for recovery and avoids a serious and difficult treatment process, and even death.

FAQ

What does the mammotome biopsy procedure look like?
The mammotome biopsy system consists of a device generating vacuum and a 3mm needle containing a rotary mechanism, allowing a single puncture to collect a sufficient amount of tissue for examination or to remove the entire lesion. Everything is performed under ultrasound guidance. The breast lesion is located using an ultrasound probe, and then the device either collects the lesion for examination or completely removes it. The entire process can be observed on the monitor screen. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. After the procedure, the patient can immediately return to normal life without the need for hospitalization. The collected samples are sent for histopathological examination. If the result is negative, the lesion is benign and there is no cause for concern!
How is the surgical removal of breast nodules performed?
During the procedure, the doctor makes an incision in a way that minimally affects the breast's aesthetics, i.e., at the border of the areola and skin or in the inframammary fold. Then, using special instruments, the tumor is enucleated, and the incision is sutured with a special continuous suture that does not leave significant scars, only cosmetic ones.
How is breast cancer surgery performed?
The operation is performed under general anesthesia and depending on its extent lasts from 1 to 2 hours. The duration of the procedure may be extended if simultaneous breast reconstruction is performed or if lymph node removal is necessary. During the procedure, transverse or oblique skin incisions are usually made, including the nipple and areola as well as the tumor lesion. The shape of the incision, and consequently the scar, depends on the breast's structure and size as well as the location and size of the tumor itself. During the procedure, primarily the mammary gland is removed up to the chest muscles. If the tumor is also present in the nearby lymph nodes, their resection is necessary. The breast tissue collected during the procedure is sent for histopathological examination to determine the tumor type and its stage. Before closing the surgical wound, usually two drains are left in the area of the removed breast to drain excess blood and fluids from the tissues after wound closure. The drains help prevent possible hematoma formation and inflammation. Drains are typically removed a few days after surgery when the discharge stops.
