Abdominal wall plastic surgery – abdominoplasty

What is this procedure?

Abdominal wall plastic surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at removing an unsightly skin and fat fold in the middle and lower part of the abdomen, often together with stretch marks commonly found in this area.

By properly tightening the abdominal wall, strengthening the anterior abdominal wall, and performing plastic surgery on the rectus abdominis muscles, it is possible to achieve a flattening effect and proper abdominal tension.

In some cases, it is advisable to combine abdominal plastic surgery with liposuction of excess fat to optimize the slimming effect.

When is abdominal wall plastic surgery indicated?

Abdominal plastic surgery offers the opportunity to correct and even out the shape of the abdominal wall, significantly improving the aesthetic appearance of this body area.

It is indicated for individuals:

  • with postpartum laxity and sagging of the abdominal wall, often combined with stretch marks
  • who have lost significant weight in a short time and whose skin has not sufficiently contracted
  • with excess skin and fatty tissue in the lower and middle parts of the abdomen
  • with a loose, hanging abdomen

FAQ

What does the abdominal wall plastic surgery procedure look like?
The operation involves making one of several types of incisions (depending on the surgeon's decision) above the pubic symphysis so that the scar is as hidden as possible, followed by dissecting the skin and fat fold from the abdominal fascia upwards to the costal arches. This allows maximum downward sliding of the skin and – after appropriate tightening – removal of the excess skin along with any stretch marks and scars from previous surgeries. An incision is first made around the navel so that it remains in place, and at the end of the procedure, it is sutured into a new, correct position.
Recovery after abdominoplasty
Immediately after the procedure, there is pain in the operated area, swelling, and numbness, which subsides over the following months. Abdominal pain lasts up to seven days, during which the patient takes oral painkillers. After the procedure, a special elastic belt is applied, which should be worn for 4 to 6 weeks. Wearing the belt helps reduce swelling. Physical activity should be limited for 4-6 weeks, and sun exposure should be avoided for 6 months after the procedure. Patients usually return to their daily activities two weeks after surgery. The final effect of the procedure is assessed 6-12 months after the operation.
What are the possible complications after an abdominoplasty?
Abdominal plastic surgeries, like any procedure, carry risks that are discussed with the patient prior to the operation. Undesirable symptoms that may occur after such procedures include: hematomas, prolonged swelling, postoperative infections, hypertrophic scars, as well as partial necrosis of the abdominal skin, which requires further treatment. It should be noted that serous fluid may accumulate under the abdominal layers for 1-6 months.
Important information for patients
Abdominal wall plastic surgery is not a procedure for obese individuals aimed at weight loss. Candidates for the procedure are generally healthy individuals.
What are the contraindications for the procedure?
Contraindications to the procedure include cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and systemic connective tissue diseases.
