Every woman should perform a monthly palpation (manual) examination of her breasts a few days after menstruation. This examination should be done in front of a mirror in a well-lit room. During the examination, special attention should be paid to the consistency and texture of the breast tissue (checking for any abnormal, previously unnoted lumps or nodules). It is important to carefully observe any changes in the skin and possible discharge from the nipple.
Breast disease prevention requires regular, specialized mammographic and ultrasound screening tests, which enable the detection of non-palpable breast tumors.
For breast disease prevention, it is recommended to have a breast ultrasound every 6 months regardless of age, and mammography once every 18 months for women over 35 years old.
Breast cancer is the most common cause of death among women in Poland under the age of 65, affecting approximately 13,000 women annually. Unfortunately, half of the diagnosed cases are fatal due to late detection of changes.
Mammographic screening, by detecting breast tumors at early stages of development, contributes to a reduction in mortality among women by up to one third, and screening performed in patients over 50 years of age reduces mortality in this age group by up to 35%. About 80% of changes are benign, but all, even those that seem insignificant, require medical consultation. If any changes are detected during the examination, further diagnostics and biopsy to obtain tissue for evaluation of the nature of the lesion are recommended.
