Breast cancer can be effectively treated!

Statistics leave no doubt – the vast majority of early-stage breast cancer cases can be effectively treated. Unfortunately, in Poland, this disease is detected too late, when metastases are already present in the patient – hence the high mortality rate compared to Europe for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Meanwhile, prevention and early diagnosis are really easy, inexpensive, and painless – one of the key examinations is breast ultrasound performed at Wilmed clinic.

According to the National Cancer Registry, in 2010 approximately 15,800 new cases of breast cancer were recorded in Poland. By 2013, this number had risen to over 17,000. Currently, nearly 19,000 new breast cancer cases are diagnosed annually, and additionally, over 6,000 women die from this disease each year. These are very unfavorable statistics – while the incidence rate is comparable to the European average, the mortality rate from breast cancer in Europe is about 1,500 lower. This is because – despite educational campaigns and emphasizing the importance of regular examinations – breast cancer is still detected too late.

These data are even more surprising given that – according to the OnkoCafe Foundation – as many as 73% of Polish women know how to perform breast self-examination, but only a small portion do so regularly. 45% forget to perform the examination, 15% consciously avoid it because they fear detecting a change, 11% do not know how often to perform it. 3% find breast self-examination unpleasant, and 1% are embarrassed to perform it.

Breast ultrasound – the basis of prevention

Advanced breast cancer is a difficult disease to treat, causing metastases to lymph nodes, liver, lungs, bones, or brain. If the tumor is detected early, in many cases therapy is limited to removing the lesion, performing follow-up tests, and continuous monitoring of the patient’s results.

The key to early breast cancer diagnosis is imaging examinations – including breast ultrasound. At Wilmed clinic in Warsaw, it is performed using the most modern equipment by doctors who also specialize in cancer treatment – this shortens the diagnostic process and allows appropriate treatment to begin sooner. Importantly, ultrasound is a painless, completely non-invasive, and safe examination, and additionally – very precise, allowing detection of changes at a very early stage of development. Specialists at Wilmed clinic can also immediately perform further diagnostics. A core needle or mammotome biopsy performed on the patient allows obtaining samples that are then sent for histopathological examination.
