Breast cancer surgery? It’s not a verdict!

Detection of breast cancer and subsequent treatment, often involving invasive breast surgeries, is always a traumatic experience for a woman. Fortunately, there are now ways to make surgical treatment of breast cancer less burdensome for the patient, and the reconstructions performed allow women to regain self-acceptance and joy of life.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor diagnosed in Polish women, and its incidence unfortunately increases year by year. Although thanks to the development of innovative medical and diagnostic methods and technologies, breast-conserving surgeries can already be performed for a significant group of patients, many still require removal of the entire organ. Nowadays, efforts are made to ensure that a woman is not left without support in the event of breast amputation – reconstructions have become standard, allowing patients to regain an aesthetic appearance, overcome complexes and low self-esteem, and restore psychological balance.

Breast reconstruction – immediate or delayed?

Breast reconstructions after surgery to remove the breast can be performed in two ways. Immediate reconstructions involve recreating the breast during the same surgery in which the breast is removed, so the patient wakes up with both the tumor removed and a new breast. Psychologically, this is undoubtedly a more favorable solution. The patient does not experience the trauma associated with losing a symbol of her femininity, can function normally, and focus solely on fighting for her health. Unfortunately, immediate reconstructions are not performed on all women – if the patient must undergo oncological treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy), the reconstructive surgery can be performed after treatment completion, and in the case of radiotherapy, no earlier than 8-12 months after its conclusion. Otherwise, complications such as tissue necrosis or implant damage could occur. There are no age limits for such surgeries – breasts are surgically reconstructed even in women in their 70s.
Of course, it should be understood that there are various methods of breast reconstruction (implants, expanders, prostheses, patient’s own tissues), and the choice depends on the individual case. It is important to note that this is a multi-stage treatment – the first surgery involves implanting an expander, which is gradually filled with saline over several months, enlarging to the appropriate size by stretching the patient’s tissues; the second procedure involves removing the expander and placing the final breast implant in its place; and the last procedure is nipple reconstruction.
