Condyloma acuminatum – treatment, what you need to know?

Condyloma acuminatum is a rather embarrassing condition affecting male and female genital organs, caused by infection with HPV viruses. Importantly, condyloma acuminatum must be treated because if left untreated, it can undergo malignant transformation. Condyloma acuminatum results from infection with HPV viruses, specifically types HPV 6 and 11. Infection can occur, for example, through sexual contact with an infected person. In most people, the immune system manages to eliminate the virus, but in some, the virus develops and causes symptoms in the form of condylomas – wart-like lesions the color of the skin that grow, spread, and merge over time, forming so-called giant condylomas. The lesions are painless but may itch or cause general discomfort.

In women, condylomas may appear on the labia, cervix, vagina, or around the anus. In men, they appear on the scrotum, shaft of the penis, foreskin, and at the urethral opening. In both women and men, they can also appear around the anus. If sexual contact with an infected person was oral, condylomas may develop in the mouth or throat.

Why must condylomas be treated?

The human body can eliminate the viruses causing condyloma acuminatum within several months, but once lesions appear, they must be treated. Firstly, as mentioned earlier, they cause discomfort, can lead to complexes and sexual dysfunction, and most importantly – they can undergo malignant transformation.

If the lesions are small, treatment may involve only pharmacological therapy and topical antiviral ointments. If there are more condylomas and they are larger, one can opt for one of the minimally invasive removal methods performed by specialists at the Wilmed Clinic.

Our patients struggling with condyloma acuminatum can choose one of two modern removal methods. One is electrocoagulation, which involves applying high-frequency current to the lesion. The high temperature generated by the electrodes coagulates the protein in the lesion, leading to its necrosis. Condylomas can also be removed by cryotherapy, freezing with liquid nitrogen. Both procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under local or intravenous anesthesia. They do not have serious side effects, and patients can leave our Clinic immediately after the procedure.

In the case of giant condylomas, our specialists perform traditional surgical excision of the lesion along with a biopsy for histopathological examination to exclude malignancy. However, it should be noted that condylomas may recur.
