Protect yourself against cervical cancer!
Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the main factors causing cervical cancer. At Wilmed Medical Clinic, we offer our patients vaccinations against these microorganisms – combined with regular screenings, they constitute the best preventive method!
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. Unfortunately, in Poland, the incidence of this cancer is about 15% higher than in other European Union countries, and the mortality rate is as much as 70% higher. These unfortunate statistics could be reversed if women adhered to basic preventive measures. These include regular screenings and vaccination against HPV, which is one of the most common causes of the disease.
HPV – what is it and how is it transmitted?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common type of sexually transmitted virus among humans. It can be transmitted during sexual intercourse as well as through genital-oral contact. Occasionally, HPV is transmitted from mother to newborn during childbirth. However, adults who have ever had sexual contact are primarily at risk of infection.
Importantly, the vast majority of infections are asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously within several months to a year. Unfortunately, this facilitates further unconscious transmission of the virus. In some infected individuals, HPV causes consequences such as genital warts, laryngeal papillomas, or precancerous lesions. Infection is also the most common cause of cervical cancer, and less frequently – vulvar, penile, or anal cancer.
HPV vaccination – an effective preventive method
A proven protective method against HPV infections is vaccination, which we provide at Wilmed Medical Clinic. Scientific studies have shown that the vaccine reduces the risk of cervical cancer by 70-90%, and its effectiveness lasts at least 8 years (likely much longer). Vaccination is most effective when administered to girls aged 11-12, before the onset of sexual activity, but it is also suitable for teenagers and adult women.
HPV vaccines are generally safe and well tolerated (though minor side effects such as swelling at the injection site may occur). There are few contraindications, but the final decision is made by a Wilmed Medical Clinic specialist after interviewing the patient. The complete HPV vaccination consists of three intramuscular injections – after the first dose, wait 1-2 months for the second, and the third about 6 months after the first.
It is important to remember that HPV vaccination is only one element of cervical cancer prevention. It should be complemented by regular gynecological consultations and cytological examinations.
For this reason, we invite all patients to take advantage of a special offer – every woman who schedules a gynecological consultation on May 10 can have a cytology test completely free of charge! Do not delay and take care of your health – appointments are available Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00 by phone at 22 651 98 61 or 692 407 540, and by email at [email protected].
