Gynecomastia – it can be treated!
Gynecomastia is defined as the enlargement of one or both male breast glands. It can occur in men of any age – however, it has various causes. In many cases, gynecomastia causes low self-esteem, complexes, and difficulties in establishing intimate relationships – fortunately, effective treatment methods exist. We of course offer them at our Wilmed clinic!
Statistics on gynecomastia are inconclusive because at certain stages of a man\’s life, gynecomastia is a physiological and self-resolving condition. Enlargement of the breast gland often occurs in male infants immediately after birth. Temporary gynecomastia appears in up to 65% of boys during puberty and resolves after hormonal balance is restored. An increase in the incidence of this condition is again noted in men over 65 years old – it is estimated that gynecomastia may affect up to 30% of men at that age. As you can see, this is a fairly common problem.
Gynecomastia – causes
In adult men, the direct anatomical cause of gynecomastia is the growth of tissue around the nipple, which is caused by rather complex hormonal disorders. Simply put – gynecomastia occurs when female hormones, estrogens, begin to dominate over the male hormone, testosterone, in the body. Factors that may contribute to this condition include:
- genetic factors,
- age,
- increased production of sex hormone-binding proteins,
- hyperthyroidism,
- liver cirrhosis,
- prolonged severe stress,
- chronic kidney failure,
- use of certain medications.
Gynecomastia is considered to be present when the thickness of the male breast gland exceeds 2 centimeters. Note! Gynecomastia should not be confused with lipomastia, which is the accumulation of fatty tissue around the male breast caused, for example, by obesity, poor diet, or insufficient physical activity.
Gynecomastia can be eliminated!
Gynecomastia in newborns or boys during puberty does not require treatment. In the case of lipomastia, good results can be achieved through weight reduction and regular exercise, possibly supported by aesthetic medicine procedures. However, gynecomastia is a condition that requires specialized treatment involving, among others, an endocrinologist. The patient will undergo hormonal tests and take medications regulating the levels of male and female hormones in the blood. If gynecomastia results from other diseases, such as kidney disorders, appropriate therapy (in this case, urological) must be implemented.
If conservative treatment does not yield results or the causes of gynecomastia cannot be determined, surgical treatment is recommended, involving the removal of excess glandular tissue. At our Wilmed clinic, such procedures are performed by experienced specialists using the most modern methods – in many cases, patients can return home just a few hours after the procedure.
