Face and neck lift
Surgical face lifting is a popular facial rejuvenation procedure. It is one of the most effective and long-lasting methods. Recommended for individuals whose appearance shows unwanted signs of aging and for whom less invasive methods do not promise spectacular results. Surgical face lifting can be performed in many places. However, it is always worth choosing places where you will feel safe and be confident that the specialists working there have experience, knowledge, and aesthetic sensitivity. Restoring facial youthfulness is an art and precision of execution.
The aging process spares no one. Some age faster, others slower. It depends on genetics, dietary choices, stress levels, and lifestyle. One thing is certain: the skin and the passage of time are critical for our appearance.
With age, the face, neck, and hands develop wrinkles, which are the result of biological changes, loss of skin density, or muscle laxity. Often, older individuals exhibit facial skin laxity, deep wrinkles, sagging tissues due to gravity, drooping corners of the mouth, sagging cheeks, visible nasolabial folds, and changes in facial contour. All these imperfections can be improved with a scalpel and surgical techniques. The effect is quick, although recovery takes several days.
Classic face lifting is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. The procedure is individually tailored to each patient. It involves reducing tissue in the middle and lower parts of the face and neck. During the procedure, the surgeon tightens the skin and works deeper. Incisions are usually made in inconspicuous places, such as the temple, in the ear, and behind the ear. After such intervention, the skin lays better on the muscles, the face does not lose elasticity, and its appearance is visibly rejuvenated.
Why undergo face or neck lifting?
Many facial rejuvenation methods are available on the market, providing results lasting 2-3 years; surgical face lifting extends this time up to 10 years. Face and neck lifting offers a long-lasting and natural rejuvenation effect. It effectively reduces excess sagging tissues that cannot be removed without a scalpel, without disturbing facial features or expressions.
Face lifting allows removal of excess skin on the face and neck, crow\’s feet, excess fat on the face and neck, and sagging nasolabial folds.
How to prepare for surgical face lifting?
Surgical face lifting is a surgical intervention and should be prepared for according to the doctor\’s recommendations. Primarily, before surgery, smoking must be stopped and alcohol avoided for two weeks. For two weeks before surgery, avoid tanning beds and sun exposure. Limit or discontinue salicylates and reduce consumption of ginger, garlic, and dietary supplements. Usually, the doctor orders the following tests one month before the planned procedure:
- ECG,
- Complete blood count with platelets,
- APTT,
- INR – PT,
- Electrolytes,
- HBS antigen,
- HCV antibodies,
- HIV antibodies,
- Blood group,
- Nasal swab for Staphylococcus aureus,
- Anal swab for KPC (CPE) carriage.
The procedure should be done on an empty stomach. Before the procedure, the doctor discusses the purpose and scope of the surgery.
If you are significantly overweight, it is advisable to lose a few kilograms before surgery. Proper diet and exercise under a personal trainer\’s supervision can help. If you dye your hair, it is best to do so before surgery to avoid irritating the skin treated during the operation.
If you develop an upper respiratory infection, flu, or other illnesses, or cold sores appear on your face before surgery, postpone the operation.
Possible complications
Possible complications related to surgical face lifting include hematoma, bleeding, facial nerve damage, swelling, bruising, wound infection, delayed wound healing, skin necrosis, pain, skin discoloration, hair loss near the scar, asymmetry, hypertrophic or keloid scars, depression, skin irregularities, short-term postoperative effects, and the need for corrective surgery.
Surgical face lifting – recovery
Surgical face lifting is an operative procedure involving skin layers. After the procedure, discomfort, bruising, and swelling will occur. This is natural, and after a few days, usually about a week, the face regains its rejuvenated appearance. During this time, it is recommended to minimize facial expressions to avoid stretching the skin.
For a month after surgery, avoid swimming pools, tanning beds, saunas, and long baths; conserve energy by refraining from intense physical activity, fitness, and gym workouts. Moderate physical activity such as walking and a balanced diet are recommended.
