Breast reconstruction after mastectomy – what you need to know?

Removal of the breast due to cancer is always a very difficult, traumatic experience for a woman. Fortunately, modern medicine offers a solution – breast reconstruction is a procedure that allows women to regain joy in life and self-acceptance. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and unfortunately, its incidence increases year by year. Although the development of modern medical technologies increasingly allows breast-conserving surgeries, a very large group of patients still requires reconstructive treatment. Therapy should not end with breast amputation and cancer cure, but also include reconstruction of the lost breast – so that the woman regains acceptance of her own body, joy of life, and a natural, aesthetic appearance.

Breast reconstruction – immediately or later?

Modern medicine allows breast reconstruction either during mastectomy surgery or as a delayed procedure. It all depends on the individual health condition of the patient, the stage of cancer advancement, and any further treatment plans. If radiotherapy is planned for the patient, breast reconstruction surgery can be performed no earlier than 8-12 months after its completion. Otherwise, complications such as tissue necrosis could occur. If the patient will undergo chemotherapy after mastectomy, breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after its completion.

Of course, immediate reconstructions, where women wake up from surgery with a new reconstructed breast, are the most beneficial. Breast reconstruction – methods

There are several methods of breast reconstruction, and the choice of the appropriate one depends, among other things, on the woman’s health, expectations, appearance, and size of the other breast. Each time, however, it is a multi-stage treatment. Breast reconstruction can be performed using artificial materials (prostheses, implants, expanders) as well as the patient’s own tissues. These two methods can also be combined. In the case of implants, the choice depends, among other things, on the shape and size of the reconstructed breast. If only the woman’s own tissues are used for reconstruction, it involves a flap from the rectus abdominis muscle.

If the other, healthy breast differs significantly from the reconstructed one, a reduction and symmetrization procedure can be considered. The final stage of treatment is the reconstruction of the nipple and areola – through appropriate tattooing or skin graft or a fragment of the nipple from the other breast.
