Varicose veins? They can be treated!

It is estimated that varicose veins of the lower limbs may affect up to 25% of the Polish population. Most often, people over 50 years old suffer from them, although varicose veins in people in their thirties are not surprising. Importantly, varicose veins are not just a cosmetic problem – they signal circulatory system issues and must be treated! At the Wilmed clinic, many modern methods of treating varicose veins are available, which do not require long recovery or hospital stays.

Varicose veins are thick, twisted veins visible under the skin, taking on a navy blue, red, or even brown color. Many people treat varicose veins as a cosmetic issue, but they are a symptom of venous insufficiency caused by valve incompetence and/or vessel wall weakening, as well as related blood flow abnormalities. It is also important to know that untreated varicose veins can lead to very serious complications, such as bleeding from affected vessels, venous ulcers, superficial and deep thrombophlebitis, and even pulmonary embolism.

What are the causes of varicose veins?

There are many causes of varicose veins. The disease may have a genetic basis and affects women more often. Risk factors include, among others, a sedentary or standing lifestyle, insufficient physical activity, pregnancy, obesity, and carrying heavy loads.

Varicose vein treatment at the Wilmed clinic

One of them is procedures using the Flebogrif method – performed under local anesthesia, minimally invasive, painless, and lasting about 30 minutes. They involve inserting a special catheter under ultrasound guidance into the diseased vein, which damages the inner vein wall while simultaneously delivering a special agent causing its closure. After the procedure, no bruises or scars form – only wearing a special compression stocking for about a month is required.

Another varicose vein treatment method available at the Wilmed clinic is sclerotherapy, which involves injecting foam or liquid into the vein using a needle and under ultrasound guidance, causing the varicose vein to close. Compression dressing is also required after sclerotherapy, but it is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed even in elderly patients on an outpatient basis. Patients can return home immediately after the procedure, which is performed under local anesthesia.

In cases of large varicose veins resistant to other treatments, classical surgical operation may be considered – it involves complete removal of the main superficial vein along with all side branches. Of course, each operation is preceded by comprehensive diagnostics and surgical consultation, during which our specialists exclude any contraindications.
