Check your skin condition after the holidays
Summer is a time when our skin is more exposed than usual to the effects of sunlight. Unfortunately, sun exposure significantly increases the risk of both very dangerous skin cancers and less dangerous but unsightly discolorations. At this time, examinations and treatments performed by specialists at the Wilmed Medical Clinic come to the rescue.
After returning from summer vacation, each of us should carefully examine our body – check whether any concerning moles have appeared on the skin and whether existing ones have changed in size or color. Although skin changes do not immediately have to be cancerous, skin cancer, especially melanoma, is one of the most dangerous types of cancer, with a very high risk of malignancy and mortality rate.
Meanwhile, a very modern, safe, effective, and minimally invasive method of assessing skin changes is videodermatoscopy performed at the Wilmed Medical Clinic. This examination is carried out using a special device called a dermatoscope, which allows very detailed observation of all moles, displaying their image on a computer screen and saving them electronically. Thanks to this, during subsequent examinations, individual images can be compared to check for any transformations.
Videodermatoscopy can be performed on anyone who notices concerning skin changes, including pregnant women and children. The examination lasts several minutes, is completely painless, and requires no special preparation – says MD Piotr Ciszewski, general surgery specialist, who performs videodermatoscopy at the Wilmed Clinic. – At least once a year, people from so-called high-risk groups, i.e., those with very fair skin, numerous moles, a tendency to sunburn, and a family history of skin cancers, should undergo the examination – he adds.
Lasers in the fight against discolorations
An effect of summer tanning can also be unsightly discolorations, appearing as smaller or larger brown spots on the skin. The risk of discoloration increases, among others, in people with congenital melanin production disorders and those taking certain medications.
At the Wilmed Medical Clinic, skin discolorations are removed using IPL laser treatments. The laser light acting on the lesion causes it to darken, gradually peel off, and finally significantly reduce or completely disappear. For the best results, a series of 5-6 treatments at intervals of 3-6 weeks is recommended. After completing the treatment, the skin becomes fresh, smooth, and acquires a nice, even tone.
Removing discolorations with IPL laser is minimally invasive, painless, and relatively safe. It is, of course, necessary to follow post-treatment recommendations, which include avoiding tanning, refraining from peeling treatments, hot baths, and sauna use. It is also advisable to ensure intensive skin hydration.
