Breast cancer prevention at the Wilmed clinic

March is the month when we celebrate International Women\’s Day. On this occasion, it is worth encouraging the women close to us – wives, mothers, sisters, friends – to have their breasts examined. Every year, about 5,000 Polish women die from breast cancer – preventive examinations can reduce these alarming statistics!

Breast cancer is a disease that unfortunately claims a huge number of lives. It affects women of various ages, sometimes very young, just after turning 20-25 years old. Unfortunately, in most cases, it is detected at advanced stages when treatment is difficult and often unsuccessful. For this reason, prevention is so important – every woman should remember to perform monthly breast self-examinations and regular ultrasound examinations. Breast ultrasound – what you need to know

Breast ultrasound is one of two essential preventive examinations for breast cancer diagnostics. All women over 30 years old should have it regularly, at least once a year. Earlier, even from 25 years old, it is recommended for women with a family history of breast cancer. Of course, breast ultrasound is also indicated if any concerning symptoms are felt during monthly self-examinations: lumps and nodules in the breast, breast pain and tenderness, or nipple discharge.

It is worth remembering that breast ultrasound is a completely safe and painless examination that requires no special preparation. It can even be performed on pregnant women. Importantly, at the Wilmed clinic, breast ultrasounds are always performed by doctors specializing in breast disease diagnostics and therapy. During the examination, they can detect nodules as small as 2-3 mm, and if necessary – immediately order additional tests, which significantly shortens the time needed for diagnosis and greatly improves the effectiveness of potential treatment.

Diagnostic biopsies at the Wilmed clinic

If any suspicious changes are detected during the breast ultrasound by our clinic’s doctor, the patient can undergo diagnostic biopsies on-site (which again shortens the diagnostic process). At Wilmed, we perform two types. Core needle biopsy involves taking a tissue sample from the lesion using a special needle and sending it for histopathological examination. Mammotome biopsy not only allows sampling tissue for examination but can also remove the entire lesion – this is possible thanks to modern equipment, including a vacuum-producing mammotome and a 3 mm diameter needle with a rotating mechanism. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance – our specialist sees the lesion on the monitor and inserts the needle in the correct place.
