Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy in Orthopedics

Platelet-rich plasma is a substance obtained from the patient’s own natural blood. It contains a very high concentration of growth factors that stimulate the formation of new cells and accelerate, among other things, recovery after diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic therapies using platelet-rich plasma are also available at our Wilmed clinic.

Platelet-rich plasma is used in many medical fields: dentistry, dermatology, aesthetic medicine, and orthopedics. It has been a true medical breakthrough in recent years. Why? Platelet-rich plasma – also called PRP plasma – is separated directly from the patient’s blood. It only requires drawing a small amount of blood (similar to that taken for standard laboratory tests) and placing it in a special centrifuge. After just a few minutes of spinning, the individual blood components separate.

This process isolates, among other things, platelet-rich plasma, which – as the name suggests – is a substance very rich in growth factors that stimulate the proliferation of new cells and accelerate the body’s natural repair processes. Because PRP plasma is derived from the patient’s own blood, it does not cause any allergic reactions or adverse effects.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy at Wilmed clinic

As mentioned earlier, platelet-rich plasma is used, among other things, in the treatment of orthopedic diseases and injuries. Administered as an injection to a specific site, it immediately stimulates cell proliferation and accelerates the body’s natural regeneration – significantly shortening recovery after injuries, speeding up bone healing, relieving joint pain, and accelerating the treatment of degenerative, overload, and inflammatory conditions of muscles and joints.
Qualification for orthopedic treatment using platelet-rich plasma is always conducted by our experienced doctors based on patient interviews, medical history, and test results. It can be applied in treating cruciate ligament tears, Achilles tendon ruptures, heel spurs, muscle injuries, degenerative knee conditions (jumper’s knee, runner’s knee), elbow joint degeneration, cartilage defects, and many others.

What else should you know?

In most cases, positive effects of platelet-rich plasma therapy are visible after the first injection, although it can be repeated if necessary. The procedure can be performed on women and men, young and elderly patients, with injuries resulting from accidents, natural aging processes, or sports activities.

Importantly, Wilmed specialists always perform the PRP injection under ultrasound guidance. This ensures the substance is delivered precisely to the intended site. The injection site is covered with a dressing, and the patient can return home immediately. Mild pain around the treatment area may be felt for a few days but usually subsides quickly.
