Modern hallux treatment at the Wilmed clinic
Contrary to stereotypical opinions, hallux valgus is not just an aesthetic problem. This foot deformity is painful, tends to worsen, and often prevents the purchase of suitable footwear. Until recently, hallux treatment involved complex surgeries and prolonged immobilization of the patient. At the Wilmed clinic, you can benefit from modern, minimally invasive hallux treatment procedures after which patients quickly return to normal activities.
Hallux valgus – also known as bunions – are foot deformities characterized by the gradual bending of the big toe towards the other toes, towards the outer edge of the foot. This process causes displacement of the head of the first metatarsal bone, which protrudes on the inner edge of the foot, forming a hallux, commonly referred to as an unsightly \”bump.\” Hallux valgus is not only an aesthetic problem (most people are embarrassed, for example, to wear open-toed shoes), but also a health issue – hallux valgus causes pain when walking (in advanced stages also at rest), leads to inflammation of the metatarsophalangeal joint, and causes rubbing when wearing shoes. Over time, the deformity can become so severe that the patient cannot buy normal shoes.
Causes of hallux valgus
Generally, hallux valgus occurs more often in women, although it is not uncommon in men. Women have a different musculoskeletal structure of the foot, increasing the risk of hallux valgus. Additionally, many women wear high heels – the unnatural foot position in high stilettos is also a factor contributing to hallux development. Other risk factors include overweight and obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, genetic predisposition, and certain diseases such as rheumatism.
How to treat hallux valgus?
If hallux valgus is just beginning and does not cause complications, treatment attempts with, for example, specialized orthopedic insoles are possible. However, if the deformity is large, causes pain, or skin irritation when walking, the only treatment option is surgery. Until recently, these surgeries were very invasive, requiring several days of hospitalization and prolonged foot immobilization.
In recent years, surgical methods for hallux valgus have significantly advanced – at the Wilmed clinic, we offer minimally invasive percutaneous hallux removal. What distinguishes this method? Hallux valgus is removed under X-ray guidance using modern instruments, resulting in skin incisions of only about 1-3 mm. There is no need for large doses of painkillers, and due to the minimal invasiveness, postoperative discomfort is much less. Most importantly for patients – a few hours after the procedure, they leave the clinic without a cast or crutches. For several weeks, only a lightweight foot brace must be worn and the foot offloaded.
