Minimally invasive disc (intervertebral disc) surgeries

Radiofrequency Electrosurgery

Minimally invasive disc surgeries at Wilmed are performed using radiofrequency electrosurgery. Procedures are conducted under local anesthesia and anesthesiologist supervision. They are performed under X-ray guidance and do not require extensive skin incisions.

  • Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy
    This procedure requires only a small skin incision – an endoscope is inserted through a cannula into the intervertebral foramen to remove the herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc. The procedure is often complemented by shrinking the disc protrusion using radiofrequency electrosurgery. This method effectively replaces traditional lumbar disc surgery performed under general anesthesia.
  • Percutaneous Implantation of DISCOGEL®
    DISCOGEL® is a flexible, gel-like nucleus pulposus prosthesis and an innovative treatment for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar herniated discs. DISCOGEL® is injected percutaneously into the nucleus pulposus, relieving nerve structures and blocking pain formation. The procedure is performed as a one-day treatment.
  • Percutaneous Implantation of GelStixTM
    The innovative GelStixTM technology helps inhibit the degenerative process of intervertebral discs by restoring proper pressure inside the disc, its hydration, and physiological pH. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia as a one-day treatment. This method can be used when extensive surgical treatment is contraindicated.
  • Percutaneous Ablation of Spinal Metastases
    This is another innovative procedure using radiofrequency electrosurgery. It involves inserting special electrodes into the vertebral body affected by metastatic disease and performing thermal ablation of the lesion. The procedure may be accompanied by vertebroplasty to reinforce the treated vertebral body.
    Treatment of intervertebral disc disorders no longer requires extensive tissue incisions, general anesthesia, or prolonged recovery.
