What are bunions?

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a common condition mainly affecting women with flat-valgus foot deformity. Very often, due to shoe pressure, a chronic inflammatory state and secondary bone tissue overgrowth occur. This progressive disease, combined with deforming changes in other foot joints, can lead to serious disability.

Treatment

The key to successful treatment of this condition is early conservative management – specially selected exercises by a specialist and properly shaped orthopedic insoles can halt disease progression.

In advanced cases, surgical intervention should be considered. The main advantages of such a procedure, performed as a one-day surgery, include:

• the patient avoids unpleasant hospitalization,
• the patient can return home just a few hours after the procedure,
• this method does not require burdensome anesthesia, making it suitable for elderly patients and those with other health conditions,

• in early stages, surgery often involves only foot muscles to restore their balance, shortening the postoperative immobilization period in a cast,
• restoration of normal, undeformed foot appearance,
• elimination of pain when walking.
