Carpal tunnel syndrome – what you need to know?

Do you notice unusual finger pain and numbness? Are everyday tasks like writing or peeling vegetables difficult? Do not ignore these symptoms! It may be carpal tunnel syndrome – a condition that specialists at Wilmed Medical Clinic can help you overcome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a group of symptoms caused by chronic compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. When inflammatory changes cause thickening of tendons and ligaments, the carpal tunnel becomes too narrow, compressing the median nerve passing through it. The nerve becomes ischemic and cannot function properly, leading to a range of characteristic symptoms.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Symptoms

The main symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • unusual numbness and finger pain – initially sporadic, later occurring at night (pain may radiate to the forearm or shoulder), and in advanced stages also during the day,
  • difficulties performing normal hand tasks such as writing, peeling vegetables, cutting, sewing,
  • muscle atrophy (in very advanced stages).

Scientific studies have shown that carpal tunnel syndrome affects women three times more often than men. People who perform repetitive hand movements for prolonged periods at work (typing, playing musical instruments, removing items from production lines) are also at risk.

How is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Diagnosed?

In most cases, specialists at Wilmed Medical Clinic can diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome during simple physical examinations. These assess manual dexterity and finger sensation. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome cannot perform certain tasks in specific hand positions and perceive two needle pricks 5-7 mm apart as one. Sometimes ultrasound is necessary to confirm the diagnosis, revealing potential nerve deformities or thickening of ligaments or tendons.

Modern Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome at Wilmed Medical Clinic

After diagnosis, our specialists offer the best treatment methods. The most modern and effective therapy is surgery, which involves cutting the transverse ligament to enlarge the space in the carpal tunnel. Although it may sound intimidating, it is a quick and safe procedure performed under local anesthesia or sedation. Patients can leave the clinic and return home just a few hours after the procedure. Wilmed’s advanced treatment techniques also ensure a short and minimally burdensome rehabilitation.

If you notice the symptoms described above, do not delay and schedule an orthopedic consultation with our specialists! Carpal tunnel syndrome will not heal on its own! We offer comprehensive care and support from an experienced team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and physiotherapists.
