Modern hernia treatment at Wilmed clinic
Hernia is a fairly common condition affecting both men and women. Its diagnosis usually does not pose a problem – what is important is to undergo treatment as soon as possible after diagnosis. We offer modern hernia treatment methods to patients at our Wilmed clinic in Warsaw.
A hernia is a protrusion that occurs as a result of internal organs pushing through an opening in the body walls. The most common type of this condition is an abdominal hernia – in this case, parts of the intestine, for example, may protrude under the skin. It may manifest as pain and a pulling sensation near the hernia, sometimes also as a palpable lump under the skin, and in advanced stages, breathing difficulties or intestinal dysfunction.
Abdominal hernia – causes, risk factors, types
There are many risk factors for developing an abdominal hernia. Those at risk include pregnant women, people engaged in very heavy physical work, patients with significant overweight, and men with prostate enlargement. The direct anatomical cause of an abdominal hernia is always an abnormal structure of the body walls and/or disorders in collagen fiber production, which are responsible for their elasticity and tightness. Based on location, abdominal hernias are classified as:
- inguinal hernia,
- femoral hernia,
- umbilical hernia,
If a hernia develops as a complication after surgery, it is referred to as a postoperative hernia.
Why should hernias be treated?
Any concerning symptoms suggesting the presence of a hernia should prompt an immediate visit to a doctor – contrary to common misconceptions, a hernia will not resolve on its own, and the only effective treatment method is surgical intervention. Delaying treatment is not advisable – an untreated hernia can lead to serious health complications, even life-threatening ones, such as intestinal necrosis or hernia incarceration.
Modern hernia treatment at Wilmed clinic
As mentioned earlier, the only effective treatment for hernias is surgery. It involves placing a special polypropylene mesh over the tissue defect, which prevents organs from protruding from the abdominal cavity. Over time, the mesh integrates with the tissues, protecting against hernia recurrence.
Until recently, surgery was performed under general anesthesia, and patients faced a long recovery period afterward. At Wilmed clinic, we treat hernias on a day-surgery basis – thanks to modern technologies and medications, as well as the expertise of our specialists, patients can return home just a few hours after the procedure to recover. The so-called tension-free method used at Wilmed reduces pain and allows procedures even for older patients (due to the use of less burdensome types of anesthesia). Return to normal activities is possible within 7 days compared to several to over ten weeks of recovery after traditional surgeries.
Additionally, compared to traditional hernia surgeries, the recurrence rate after operations using the tension-free method affects less than 1% of patients. After traditional surgeries, the recurrence rate is approximately 10-20%.
We invite all patients requiring abdominal hernia treatment to surgical consultations at Wilmed clinic!
