Grzybica paznokci – letni problem

Nail fungus is a common disease, unfortunately quite difficult to treat and prone to recurrence. Everyone is at risk regardless of gender or age, and summer activities such as using swimming pools, walking barefoot on the beach, or trying on shoes during summer sales promote it. At Wilmed clinic, our dermatologists will help effectively eliminate this problem!

Until recently, nail fungus was considered a cosmetic problem – today it is recognized as a disease that can cause unpleasant consequences. It affects women and men, children, adults, and seniors (its prevalence increases with age). Infections are mainly caused by dermatophytes, less often by yeast-like fungi and molds; the disease affects toenails much more often than fingernails. Its main symptoms include discoloration and thickening of the nail plate, detachment of the nail from the bed, brittleness, and crumbling of the plate. It may be accompanied by itching, sometimes pain, and embarrassment due to aesthetic reasons.

Nail fungus likes to attack in summer

As mentioned earlier, nail fungus occurs more often on the feet than on the hands. Why? Feet are often kept in socks made of synthetic fabrics, tightly enclosed, non-breathable shoes, sweat, and after bathing may be inadequately dried – moisture, darkness, and lack of air access create perfect conditions for fungal growth. Infections are also promoted by sharing foot care accessories among several family members.

Fungus particularly likes to attack in summer. On sunny, hot days, we often use public pools or water parks where hygiene leaves much to be desired, shower in hotel bathrooms, and use hotel towels. Few people realize that prolonged barefoot walking on sandy beaches or even trying on shoes barefoot during popular summer sales can contribute to fungal development!

Treatment of nail fungus at Wilmed clinic

Anyone struggling with nail fungus, regardless of the season, is welcome to consult our dermatology specialists at Wilmed clinic. This condition should not be underestimated – fungus can spread, affecting other body parts and easily infecting household members. Depending on the patient’s individual needs and disease severity, our doctors will recommend appropriate therapy – topical or systemic. Sometimes mycological tests are necessary to confirm the specific fungi causing the infection. We invite you to contact us!
