Thyroid nodules – what are they?

Thyroid nodules are the most commonly diagnosed pathology of this gland, much more frequently diagnosed in women than in men. Their formation may have a genetic basis, they can result from iodine deficiency in the diet, be a symptom of hormonal disorders, Hashimoto\’s disease, but also a sign of cancer.

Although thyroid cancer is a relatively rare tumor (about 1% of cases, approximately 1500-1800 cases annually in Poland), it can be very dangerous because it is often diagnosed late. In many cases, it does not cause any specific symptoms, and one symptom is a fixed, hard, painless, rapidly enlarging nodule.

Diagnosing thyroid nodules

Ultrasound examination and fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid, which involves collecting cellular material from the nodule using a very thin needle under ultrasound guidance and then subjecting it to histopathological analysis, are used to differentiate benign from malignant thyroid nodules. This allows a definitive assessment of whether the lesion is cancerous.

The procedure is minimally invasive, essentially painless (the patient feels only a slight prick), requires no special preparation, and carries no risk of complications.
