Non-surgical removal and diagnosis of breast tumors

Breast disease prevention requires regular mammographic and ultrasound screening tests, which enable the detection of non-palpable breast and nipple tumors.

Mammographic screening tests, by detecting breast tumors at early stages of development, contribute to a reduction in mortality among women by up to one third, and screening tests performed in patients over 50 years of age reduce mortality in this age group by up to 35%. Approximately 80% of changes are benign, but all, even those inconspicuous, require medical consultation. If any changes are detected during the examination, further diagnostics and biopsy to obtain tissue for evaluation of the nature of the lesion are recommended.

Since 1996 worldwide, and in Poland in some highly specialized medical centers since 1999, a modern device for mammotome biopsy has been used.

Mammotome biopsy, i.e., vacuum-assisted core needle biopsy, is a modern diagnostic method that combines the effectiveness of surgical biopsy, providing a definitive diagnosis based on histopathological examination, with the delicacy of core needle biopsy, as it leaves only a barely visible mark on the skin. This method allows the physician to leave a small, 2mm clip at the biopsy site, which later enables quick localization of the biopsy site during subsequent mammographic examinations.
What does the mammotome biopsy procedure look like?

The system for performing mammotome biopsy consists of a vacuum-generating device and a 3mm needle containing a rotary mechanism, allowing a single puncture to obtain sufficient tissue for examination. Everything is done under ultrasound guidance. The lesion in the breast is located using an ultrasound probe, and then the device collects the lesion for examination. The entire process can be observed on a monitor screen. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. After the procedure, the patient can immediately return to normal life without the need for hospitalization. The collected samples are sent for histopathological examination. If the result is negative, the lesion is benign and there is no cause for concern!
