Each of us has a loving family, children, grandchildren, professional plans, and many dreams to fulfill… For these and many other reasons, it is worth taking care of your health. Let us especially remember regular cytology and breast ultrasound (USG) – these safe and minimally invasive examinations allow for the quick detection of cancers of the cervix and breast, which are particularly dangerous for women.

Statistics leave no doubt – breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women. It accounts for nearly 23% of all malignant tumor cases and about 14% of deaths from this cause. It is estimated that around 400,000 women worldwide die from breast cancer each year. The risk of developing the disease increases with age, with women over 50 being particularly at risk. 5-10% of breast cancers are hereditary.

As with many other diseases, the key to preventing breast cancer and increasing the chances of complete recovery is early detection of the condition. One of the most important preventive examinations is breast ultrasound, performed by specialists at the Wilmed medical clinic who treat breast diseases. Every woman over 30 should regularly undergo this examination. Indications for breast ultrasound also include any concerning symptoms in the breast area (pain, swelling, nipple discharge), cases of breast cancer in close family members, and the use of oral hormonal contraception.

Breast ultrasound – how is it performed?

Breast ultrasound is a completely safe, minimally invasive, and painless examination. It usually lasts from a few to several minutes. During the procedure, the woman lies on a couch without upper clothing and underwear, and the doctor applies a special gel to the breasts. Then the specialist moves a special ultrasound probe over the breasts and armpits, and the resulting image is visible on the monitor. Breast ultrasound can detect changes as small as 5 mm and distinguish malignant tumors from cysts. Mammography can also be performed as a complementary examination.

Cytology is fundamental!

Another typically female disease is cervical cancer. It is the third most common malignant tumor affecting women, with the peak incidence occurring in the sixth decade of life. Unfortunately, Poland is among the countries with one of the highest incidence and mortality rates in all of Europe.
Meanwhile, early detected cervical cancer can also be cured, and the basic preventive examination for this disease is cytology. It allows detection of cervical cancer even at the preinvasive stage, which significantly increases the chances of complete recovery. Additionally, cytology is performed to diagnose other diseases of the female reproductive tract, such as erosions.
Since cytology is a completely safe, painless, and non-invasive examination (it involves taking a smear from the cervix, which is then subjected to specialized laboratory analysis), it is best to have it done once a year, or at least once every two years.

An important element of uterine cancer prevention is also vaccination against the HPV virus (human papillomavirus), which – as studies have shown – significantly increases the risk of both precancerous changes in the cervix and its cancers. Infection with the virus can occur, for example, through sexual contact, and vaccination is the only effective method to avoid infection.
